Referencing

CBS Communication Skills Centre

You will need to reference in all of your assignments. A reference acknowledges other people's ideas.

See the Curtin library guide to Chicago Referencing

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the use of other people's work, ideas, theories, diagrams, tables etc without acknowledging the original author (presenting it as your own original work). Plagiarism is also failing to acknowledge someone else's exact words, ie not using direct quotation marks.

All students must become familiar with Curtin's policy on plagiarism to avoid it becoming an issue. Plagiarism is treated very seriously and at worst, can ruin or end your academic career. See Essential student policies & guidelines.

Referencing queries

It is sometimes difficult to decide what has to be referenced and what does not. The Communication Skills Centre runs workshops on referencing and how to avoid plagiarism (see Workshop timetable). You can also discuss any referencing queries in a one-to-one consultation with the Centre staff (see consultations).
