Christopher Curnow - Accounting

Achieving excellent results throughout his studies has landed Christopher Curnow, Curtin Business School’s (CBS) recently-named Best Accounting Graduate, a much-coveted job and allowed him to have high aspirations for his future.

Christopher graduated with a double major in Accounting and Finance and was one of only five Accounting recruits chosen by Woodside Energy Ltd for their three-year graduate program.

"It wasn’t hard to find jobs; but it was quite hard finding one I thought I would really like, and one that would do justice to the effort I put into my degree,” Christopher said. "Within my three years I’ll rotate through many aspects of the company; from tax, audit, statutory reporting, financial accounting, management accounting, and even investor relations. I may even get to go overseas.”

"I always knew I wanted to study business and chose CBS because of the solid reputation it has within Australian and international commerce, and also the flexibility and practical skills offered to students. "But it wasn't until I graduated that I fully realised the high standard and relevance of a CBS degree.”

Christopher said he hopes to gain his Chartered Accounting qualification while completing the graduate program, and then hopes to venture overseas to gain more experience.

"I wouldn't trade my current position for anything in the world; it’s much more than journals and number crunching. Not only do I get to use my degree in a practical sense, but I've also learnt more about the oil and gas industry than I would ever have imagined."

Zoe Yates -Accounting

Zoe Yates has landed her dream job in a management accountant role at Woodside, six months prior to completing her studies.

Zoe said that two and a half years into her Bachelor of Commerce degree, she was selected by Woodside to participate in their cadetship program.

"The cadetship involved me working during holiday breaks for a period of twelve weeks,” Zoe said. “After this twelve-week period, Woodside offered me full time work as an Assistant Accountant in the Corporate Finance area.”

Zoe has been promoted to a management accountant role after only one and a half years with the company. She is currently studying part-time, completing a double major in Finance and Business Management.

Zoe’s short term goals are to complete her degree, stay at Woodside and get her CPA. “Next year there may be an opportunity for me to work in Karratha for six months and I think this will be a great opportunity for me to experience working on site,” Zoe said.

"I am also looking forward to being involved with a mentoring program for Indigenous students at various high schools.

"In the long term, I hope to work with local Indigenous communities by providing financial and accounting consultation for Indigenous organisations.”

"Originally I was interested in studying finance to get a better understanding on how to manage my own money,” “As the semesters went by, I really started to enjoy the corporate side of investment and understanding how finance is managed at a company level. I would recommend accounting and finance as a career to anyone".
