Overview

The importance of oil and gas management

The CBS Area of Research Excellence in Oil and Gas Management (OGM) has a unique research focus on the management issues associated with capital-intensive energy industries. These issues are partly in the private domain, such as issues of financing large projects for exploitation, transportation and use of energy, and partly public, such as environmental impact of operations in remote areas and regulation of prices at critical points in the supply chain that feature monopoly elements.

However, and despite the value of Australia’s energy exports, there are no other current concentrations of research expertise specific to oil and gas that deal with the whole supply chain from resource extraction to end user, combining both private and public enterprises. Yet, interdependence of decisions at various points of the supply chain means that an understanding of the whole supply chain is critical to success of businesses in these industries and to the implementation of sound public policy.

Located at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia, the AORE in Oil and Gas Management is uniquely placed to develop and maintain expertise in the field, particularly amid the currently burgeoning oil and gas industry here, and is able to draw on the wide range of expertise available in both the Curtin Business School and in the wider University community, as well as collaborating with specialists at the University of Western Australia and abroad.

The researchers associated with this AORE have expertise that spans the whole of the supply chain from upstream exploration activities, through the financing and development of resource deposits, to the analysis of pricing and regulation in raw materials and energy markets, and to forecasting demand for end products. These researchers are committed to integrating their expertise, concentrating on applied research relating to the natural gas business in particular, and to making that research feed into training programs.

Research Foci

The AORE in Oil and Gas Management seeks to provide an understanding of the methods and designs which result in the most efficient environment for the exploration, production, transmission, transportation, distribution, storage and retailing of oil and gas products.  This is achieved by examining issues such as:

  • Regulation
  • Taxation
  • Markets
  • Strategic management
  • Technology development, links to science and engineering, and the implementation of technology in oil and gas
  • Impacts on developing countries
  • Information systems, IT, data mining
  • Financing
  • Supply chain/procurement
  • Long term contracts
