Inaugural School of Economics & Finance/CRAE Research Symposium
December 3 - 5, 2008 Yanchep
The 2008 Research Symposium is sponsored by the School of Economics and Finance and organised by CRAE. The theme is sustainable economic development, and the School is fortunate to have Professor Stan Metcalfe, the 2008 Haydn Williams Fellow, as keynote speaker at the symposium. Professor Pat Fraser of the University of Aberdeen, who is a visiting fellow, will also attend to give feedback.
The symposium is an integral part of the plan to strengthen the School’s research culture. The first full day is dedicated to the presentation of research papers and feedback sessions, while the second day is focused on developing research projects, formulating approaches to improve on grant application success rates and sourcing research funds.
Key features of the Symposium are:
- Diversity – the theme was chosen to encompass the range of research conducted across the School’s disciplines of economics, finance, banking and property studies. In all, 15 researchers will present a range of research topics that are “works in progress”. It is this diversity of specialisation that adds to the research strength of the school.
- Participation – staff involved at all levels of research, HDR’s, ECR’s and senior researchers, are invited to attend the symposium. All papers nominated for presentation are included in the program. The presentation sessions will be chaired by senior researchers, and all researchers are encouraged to provide feedback. The intention is to create a supportive “workshop” environment for the purpose of refining and improving research publications.
- Collaboration – the symposium is an opportunity for researchers to showcase their areas of research interest and will provide an environment conducive to collaboration, the development of ideas and the sharing of resources.
It is envisaged the symposium will create a fertile environment for staff who are HDR’s and ECR’s to develop their research skills, profiles and projects. Senior researchers will have the opportunity to expand their research endeavours and collaborations, while supporting and mentoring junior researchers. Papers presented at the symposium will add to the School and CRAE’s working paper series, with a view to future journal publications. The development of quality research projects and grant applications is also a priority of the symposium.
